across and within

works on paper and comics poetry by Franklin Einspruch

June 11 - July 16th, 2022

Franklin Einspruch, painter, poet, art critic, blogger, and recent Fulbright scholar writes:

“The works selected for Across and Within reflect time spent painting in opposite corners of Massachusetts. The dramatic clay cliffs of Aquinnah on Martha's Vineyard inspired careful observations in watercolor. Mount Greylock prompted exploration of a method of thick outlines filled with variegated paints (handmade gouaches and egg tempera, formulated to be a little erratic), taking inspiration from other examples of figurative modernism. Along the way, pictures appeared in the studio, many of them flowers, because I am in favor of pleasure. That activity informed my work in comics poetry, a genre in which one strives for the literary effect of poetry using the vocabulary of comics: words, images, panels, and so on. For "Across and Within," new comics poetry will be extemporaneously painted on the walls of the gallery.”

As artist, poet and author Paul Reps once wrote, "The line comes before meaning.”
